Edward de Vere is the illegitimate child of Queen Elizabeth I, as well as the Earl of Oxford. In his youth, he wrote a play called A Midsummer Night's Dream but was forbidden from writing anymore from his family, as it was considered taboo.
However, Edward pays no attention to this warning and continues to write. He is inspired to pen more plays after seeing the power that the Globe theatre had in drawing large crowds. The one thing he can't do is publish them under his own name, so he takes it upon himself to find a writer who will pretend to have written the plays.
One such writer, Ben Jonson, refuses to stage de Vere's recently written play, Henry V but becomes a confidant in the Earl of Oxford. Just when it seems that no one will stage de Vere's play under their own name, a bumbling actor steps forward, whose name is William Shakespeare. He agrees to stage and publish all the future writings of de Vere and the rest is history.
