Captain Roberto Nascimento works for Rio de Janeiro's BOPE (Special Police Operations Battalion) as Commander-in-Chief, when he gets promoted to sub-Secretary of Security for the State. Roberto begins work on an operation on a prison riot, with devastating results.
The disastrous operation means that Roberto loses his job and gets pulled into a political dispute. Brazil's police force becomes corrupt and slowly takes over the organised crime in Rio, in an attempt to become the biggest crime syndicate in the city. The only ally Roberto has is a left wing human rights activist called Diogo Fraga, who also happens to be dating Roberto's ex wife.
Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is the sequel to the 2007 film The Elite Squad. The story is set thirteen years after the events of the first film. The film premiered in Brazil in October 2010 and won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2011.
