The filmmaker passed away on Wednesday (01Jul15), according to Variety.com.

Sollima began his career as a film critic, but moved into screenwriting in the 1950s.

In 1962, he made his directorial debut with anthology film Of Wayward Love, and went on to make films including The Big Gundown, starring Lee Van Cleef and Tomas Milian, Violent City, with Charles Bronson and Telly Savalas, and Revolver.

Sollima also worked in TV, directing Italian miniseries Sandokan.

He is survived by two children, including his director son Stefano Sollima.
