Bindi Irwin has joined Dancing With The Stars. The 17-year-old conservationist is the first celebrity contestant to be announced for the 21st season of the show. The news was announced on Monday (24th August) and Bindi personally made the announcement whilst appearing on Good Morning America.

Australian-born Bindi is best known as the daughter of Steve and Terri Irwin. She’s also a conservationist, animal rights campaigner and television presenter. So the show will certainly be a change for Bindi, as she explained in her GMA interview. 

"This is completely different to anything I have ever done in my life," Bindi said. "I am used to wrangling crocodiles."

"I actually just got back from our annual crocodile research trip," she added. "About four days ago I was in far north Queensland catching crocs and now here I am in New York City, about to be in LA."

Her father, Steve Irwin A.K.A. The Crocodile Hunter, died in 2006 at the age of 44 when he was accidentally killed by a stingray. Steve was renowned for his bravery in handling animals the majority of us would run a mile from. Bindi has followed in her father’s footsteps, not only in helping run the family zoo in Australia and her love for animals, but also in relishing a challenge.

"It’s all about having the courage and strength and, for me,” Bindi said. “It is something completely different but I hope that I am able to inspire others in their own lives to seize opportunity and to make a difference and just jump, take that leap, even if it terrifies you.”
