Jupiter Ascending Review

Very Good

Filmmaking siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski never do anything by halves. The Matrix was a genre-changing blockbuster followed by two head-scratching sequels that ramped everything up a bit too much. Speed Racer was simply too much eye-candy for most viewers. And Cloud Atlas' intertwined storylines left audiences both exhausted and exhilarated. Now they've taken on the space action adventure with unfettered gusto, creating an utterly bonkers story that can't help but keep us thoroughly entertained.

So it turns out that Jupiter (Mila Kunis), an immigrant cleaner in Chicago, is actually the recurrence of a powerful matriarch whose empire runs the universe as a big business. Her three children (Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth and Tuppence Middleton) are tussling over control, because their mother's re-appearance changes their inheritance rights. Chased by bounty hunters, Jupiter is rescued by Caine (Channing Tatum) and his cohort Stinger (Sean Bean), who help her navigate the complex galactic society to claim her genetic rights. But each of the three children has plans for her. And as she zips back and forth across the universe, Jupiter realises that she's going to need to rise to the occasion if she wants to save herself. And Earth.

The Wachowskis clearly understand that the story is far too complicated to make much sense, so they only provide enough information to hold the audience's interest. Large plot threads and characters pop up and disappear at random, while Jupiter's own journey lurches through a series of contrived set-pieces and tense encounters that feel oddly unresolved. But none of that really matters, because the film is infused with a sardonic sense of humour that makes it enjoyable. Even the bad guys are intriguing; there's not much Redmayne can do with his leather-trousered grump, but at least he goes for it. Kunis has a great time with Jupiter's continual sexy costume changes, while Tatum performs a series of action scenes with his shirt off for no real reason. All of the cast members dive in without hesitation, using sheer charisma to make the characters a lot of fun to watch.

Huh? 'Jupiter Ascending' Given Last Minute Delay In Release Date

Mila Kunis Channing Tatum Sean Bean

Jupiter Ascending won't see release until February next year, it has recently been announced. The unusual, late minute move marks the movie's opening pushed back seven months despite promotion for the sci-fi blockbuster having reached a peak.

We were excited way back in March for the Wachowski brothers futuristic slingshot into space, which stars Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Sean Bean but have now been told that we'll have to wait until next February to see the movie's special effects, which look to be awesome.

It is actually the special effects department that has reportedly delayed the movie. "With the July release date, they were just not going to make it on time," said Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman, via Variety. "A lot of the issue for us was getting it ready for the international release, since the foreign territories need additional time."

Mila Kunis jupiter ascendingMila Kunis finds out she has a date with destiny in 'Jupiter Ascending'

The Wachowski’s siblings are of course the minds that brought us 'The Matrix' trilogy, which set a pretty high bar for their future big screen endeavours. Their last outing ‘Cloud Atlas’ received a mixed response from critics, some thought it was an ambitious success which thoroughly paid off, while others found it a bit too much on all levels. If it’s an ambitious project you’re looking for, though, you might want to turn your attention to ‘Jupiter Ascending’. This intergalactic sci-fi adventure might just be the best showcase of the Wachowski’s writing and visual talents since the first ‘Matrix’.

'Game Of Thrones' Crowned Most Torrented Show Of 2013

Kit Harington Sean Bean Emilia Clarke Bryan Cranston Vince Gilligan Andrew Lincoln

Game of Thrones is officially the most illegally downloaded series once again, as the hit HBO drama was named the most pirated television series of 2013 by piracy site TorrentFreak. Taking into account the amount of downloads amassed through BitTorrent over the past twelve months, the television adaption of George RR. Martin's stories has taken home the crown of 'Most Torrented Show' for the second year running.

Kit Harington
You know nothing about the illegal distribution of TV programmes, Jon Snow

With 5.9 million downloads via BitTorrent alone, that means that season three of the hit series was watched illegally more times than it was through legal means. The season garnered an average of 5.5 million viewers in the US legally, with most illegal downloads coming in the first week after the show initially aired on HBO, taking the overall tally of the show's illegal viewers past the legal tally. The poll does not take into account downloads from other torrent sites, such as The Pirate Bay or Kickass Torrents, which probably means that the overall figure for illegally downloaded episode is even higher than the report states.

Internet Explodes After Game Of Thrones' Red Wedding; But Who Reacted Best? [Video]

Sean Bean

Since Sunday (June 2), the internet has been awash with Game of Thrones-related talk of some kind, some in sheer disbelief of the final scene in the bloody episode, some in an angry response to spoilers for the show being in every direction and of course, those smug book-readers who know what was going on the whole time. But with so much material to laugh and/or shake a fist at, we've compiled a quick list of the best responses to 'The Rains of Castamere.'

Spoilers! The latest fad to take over YouTube and the like has been the various 'reaction videos' to the episode, with some views acting hilarious to down right outrageous. Lets not forget, there was also Maisie Williams' (who plays one of the few remaining Starks left in GoT) own reaction to the scene, that she only narrowly avoided being a part of, that she uploaded to Vine following the show's airing. You shouldn't watch it if you've had enough spoilers for now though, because her attempts at altering her face ma be pointing towards a certain plot development with a certain Jaqen.

Weirdest Pub Crawl Ever? Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Princess Beatrice, Dave Clark

Mila Kunis Ashton Kutcher Princess Beatrice Dave Clark Sean Bean

British royalty Princess Beatrice and boyfriend Dave Clark entertained Hollywood couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher over the weekend, taking them on a tour of London's swankiest bars and restaurants. Things started at the Duck & Waffle on the 40th floor of Heron Tower in East London, but soon headed to Callooh Callay in Shoreditch.

Next came the John Salt bar in Islington, North London, where the drinks kept on coming. "They asked for our best speciality dish, said John Salt boss Leigh Gillson, "We gave them deep fried banana in caramel." A source added: "It wasn't a boozy bender, more an upmarket crawl." Mila, 29 and Ashton, 35, are currently living in London while the actress shoots her new movie Jupiter Ascending.

According to the UK's Daily Mail, the foursome even managed to hit celebrity restaurant Scott's in Mayfair and the Spanish restaurant Cambio De Tercio in Kensington, where Mila and Ashton were given matching Real Madrid shirts - which they later wore.

Mirror Mirror Review

Good
Both lavishly produced and light-hearted in tone, this fractured fairy tale aspires to be The Princess Bride, and actually gets it right from time to time.

While it's too uneven and corny to be a classic, it's still a lot of fun.

After the King disappears, his daughter Snow White (Collins) is raised by her conniving step-mother (Roberts), who plots with her right-hand man (Lane) to steal the kingdom from Snow. Then handsome Prince Alcott (Hammer) arrives and shakes things up, immediately falling for Snow, which sends the queen into even crazier fits of jealousy. She sends Snow into the woods to be eaten by a mythical beast, but Snow instead befriends a gang of dwarf bandits (Povinelli, Klebba, Saraceno, Prentice, Gnoffo and Woodburn), who teach her how to fight back.

Silent Hill Review

Very Good
I have not played the video game upon which this film is based, and I assume that that's not a prerequisite. If the game is anywhere as creepy and odd as this movie, perhaps I should. The plot concerns a typical family with atypical problems, their young daughter Sharon (played by the J-horror-haired Jodelle Ferland) is a sleepwalker and it seems as though her somnambulistic journeys take her further and further from the safety of home (in the opening minutes of the movie we see her standing atop a particularly dangerous cliff face). Her parents Rose (Radha Mitchell) and the dour Christopher (Sean Bean) are at odds over what to do. Christopher opts for medication, while Rose decides to follow Sharon's lead. When she's dreaming, Sharon mentions a town called Silent Hill. Rose decides she'd better bring Sharon to the town and find out just what all the fuss is about. Turns out, Silent Hill is off limits - the place is a ghost town after a disastrous fire. And the fire still burns under its decaying crust.

A car accident, a nosy cop on a motorcycle (Deborah Kara Unger), and Sharon's escaping into the deserted town that rains ash, all collide in a chain reaction that leads Rose into a literal heart of darkness. Silent Hill, the town, inhabits a peculiar limbo - it is quite literally cut off from the rest of the world - where air raid sirens (surely some of the creepiest sound effects you're ever likely to hear in a film) precede the coming of a dark tide that washes over the ghost town with surprising regularity. With the arrival of the eldritch dark, the walls literally shred away, revealing an industrial hellscape that lies somewhere beneath the reality of the decaying town, populated by human-faced, screaming insects, twisted lava infants, and something called "Pyramid Head," that has an incredibly unwieldy helmet and one of the largest swords in cinema history. It's a brutal, dark, and hideous place and the highlight of the film.
